Shutter Island
absolutely loved it. amazing directing, amazing acting, amazing cinematography, amazing storyline. yes, the twist at the end might be a little “convenient” or “disappointing” but I think it was the most realistic and chilling. keen to read the book/s it was based on. not Leo’s best, but he still does an impeccable job.

Valentine’s Day
felt like a very second-rate Love Actually, what with the token young-boy-who-speaks-boldly-about-being-in-love-and-has-no-mother, but it was okay, an easy film to watch I guess. some of the actors were decent, some were hard to watch (like Taylor Swift who tried wayyy too hard to shake off her “good girl” image). it was just worth sitting in the air-conditioned cinema with my lovely boyfriend :)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
don’t know how many times I’ve seen this movie, but I think I may have finally placed it as equal favourite movie alongside a few others. it’s simply brilliant - completely original and complex and magical and artistic and simple and trippy. I love everything about this film, and I love showing it other people for the first time and watching their reactions when they finally begin to piece it all together. one day I will buy a real hard copy of the script.

Mockingbird Wish Me Luck
so I never got to finish this book, because the library demanded it back due to someone else reserving it for their selfish needs. but I fell in love with Bukowski after the very first few lines in this marvellous and unique collection of poems. he’s a new favourite writer, and I will be scouring secondhand bookshops for some battered and weathered copies of books by him.

Bran Nue Dae
wow, did I forget to post about seeing this movie? must have been because it was such a forgettable experience for me. did not enjoy this movie much at all. Geoffrey Rush was impeccable, Ernie Dingo was great, the other actors were bearable but I couldn’t help but cringe and scoff and groan throughout the entire thing. I love musicals, I really do! but this one was simply too far-fetched, too borderline on embarrassing and stereotypical. the songs were okay, the music was okay. I’m glad it was short, I’m glad it didn’t cost more than $7.50.

enjoyable. nothing beats the old Disney/Pixar classics, but I guess I had a different taste in movies when I was younger anyway.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being - Milan Kundera
this belongs beside the titles I claim to be my “favourites”. everything in this book was relevant to my thoughts, or inspiring to my still developing viewpoints, or simply something I could take as truth. I loved it.

Love Actually
I needed to watch a romantic comedy, and one to get me into the Christmas spirit, so 2nd time viewing? my favourite storyline is probably the young boy with the mother who has just died. and Rowan Atkinson is superb. I was feeling overly sentimental today, so the ending produced a few tears. oh Beach Boys.

Away We Go
absolutely adored this film. combining the incredible director Sam Mendes with a witty but also heartfelt script and a melodic soundtrack and the downright amazing John Krasinski = no way this film could go wrong. such a good film to see on a date. Maggie Gyllenhaal was quite impressive. definitely quotable, and so lowkey I feel like I can claim it as my own! also, the house at the very end is my dream house. it’s quite literally the house I see in my dreams, and they found it and captured it on film. I am in love.

American Beauty
movie #2 in goal to educate boyfriend on the best films the world can offer (aka. my favourites). ohhhh Kevin Spacey you devil. despite how much it has been mocked, my favourite scene is still the plastic bag scene. a definite favourite, even after re-watching it many times.
